Leiden is a historic university city located in the western part of the Netherlands, conveniently situated between The Hague and Amsterdam. Whether you’re traveling internationally or coming from within the Netherlands, Leiden is easily accessible by air, train, and road.
By Air
If you are flying to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (AMS), the easiest way to travel to Leiden is by train.
The airport includes an underground railway station, with frequent services to Leiden (as final destination, or en route to The Hague/Den Haag, Rotterdam, or Vlissingen). From the airport to Leiden by train takes 15-20 minutes. For more information visit www.ns.nl.
By Train
Leiden Centraal is a major railway hub with excellent connections. Direct trains run regularly from cities including:
- Amsterdam (30–40 minutes)
- The Hague (10-20 minutes)
- Rotterdam (35 minutes)
- Utrecht (50 minutes)
Visit ns.nl for timetables and ticket information.
By Car
Leiden is accessible via the A4 and A44 motorways. However, parking in the city center is limited. We recommend using one of the Park and Ride (P+R) facilities on the outskirts and continuing by public transport or bicycle.
Local Transport
Once in Leiden, the city is very walkable, and most venues are easily accessible by foot or bike. Buses and taxis are also available, and rental bikes can be found throughout the city. When travelling by public transport best is to check the public transport planner 9292.nl.
